The red car shown here is still technically a concept, featuring a handcrafted aluminium body made using traditional English wheel and crafted body bucks, much like those used in the past at Newport Pagnell. Mechanically the car is V12 Vantage although in race car form, boasts an engine with slightly higher power output. The photographs here show the first car prior to the fitting of the race spec rear wing, steel brakes and race wheels. Shortly before the Frankfurt show in 2011, AM announced that the road spec V12 Zagato would indeed make production from mid 2012. Initially, no more than 150 examples were planned but following the announcement of the V12 Vantage Roadster, the Zagato run was scaled back to no more than 101 examples although far less were actually completed.
V12 Zagato Racecar Concept

The relationship between Aston Martin and the Italian coachbuilder, Zagato first begin in 1960 with the introduction of the race ready DB4GT Zagato. The relationship was renewed in the late 1980's with the V8 Vantage & Volante Zagato, and again in the 'nourties' with the DB7 based Zagato and DB-AR1. The 2011 V12 Zagato concept renewed the association, when a red car (known internally as Zag) was premiered at the Concorso D’Eleganza at Villa D’Este in May 2011, winning the Design award for Concepts and Prototypes. The very next week, a second car, painted green and known as Zig, was raced at the Nürburgring. A few weeks later and at the 39th ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hour race in June 2011, both Zig and Zag Zagato concepts came in 5th and 6th in the SP8 class.
